When will I ovulate?

Ovulation is the process by which a mature egg (ovum) is released from one of your two ovaries and it is pushed down in the fallopian tube, it enters into the uterus where this egg is fertilized by a mature sperm, process of conception takes place and pregnancy starts. Time of Ovulation is different in different women This time of ovulation is not same in all women, this time slightly varies according to their menstrual cycle every month. Every woman has her own unique character and likewise changes in regular menstrual cycle cause changes in ovulation. To know about the time of ovulation, first we need to understand the menstrual cycle. Menstrual Cycle Every Month This is the cyclical activity of endometrium (lining of uterus) during the initial 2 to 8 days of which menstruation (periods) occurs. Occasionally the cycle may be of 21 to 35 days. The days of cycle are enumerated from the first day of menses. Ovarian cycle The gonadotrophic hormones of pituitary gland regulate the ovarian activity. This depends upon a complex integrated action between higher centers, pituitary gland, hypothalamus and ovaries. The production of Gonadotropins in the pituitary gland are cyclically controlled by the Hypothalamus. The hypothalamus produces Gonadotropins releasing Hormone which is responsible for both F.S.H (follicle stimulating Hormone) and L.H (Luteinizing Hormone) hormones. Link among the Hypothalamus, pituitary and Ovaries Hypothalamus, pituitary Gland and ovaries are interlinked with each other. Disturbance of one organ may lead to disturbed function of the other organ. Days of Ovulation and Expected Time To know about the time of ovulation one must know the expected days when women are most fertile and ovulation can occur anytime in those fertile days. Most Fertile Days Or fertile Window The term fertile window is used for the time period when women are in their most fertile period, when body is just waiting to greet the mature sperm to come and meet her mature ovum to give Birth a wonderful New Life, and is ready to accept the change, nature has created. This is the most favorable time to have a fruitful relationship. Every woman must know her fertile window These favorable days must be in the knowledge of every woman so they can make preparations and be mentally strong to accept the challenge of possible motherhood. This fertile window depends upon the regularity of menstrual cycle every month and every woman has different schedule of periods. Phases of cycle There are 2 phases of menstrual cycle and ovulation occurs in the middle of these 2 phases. Follicular phase From the Day 1 of the menstrual cycle until ovulation is called the Follicular phase. This follicular phase is controlled by follicle stimulating hormone (F.S.H) Luteal phase From ovulation until the end of your periods is called Luteal phase which normally lasts 12 to 16 days. In this phase Luteinizing Hormone is active and controls all activities. Expected Days of Ovulation The first day of periods is the first day of cycle, from this onward 11th to 14th day of cycle are included in expected days of ovulation when ovulation can occur anytime and ovary can release ovum according to its normal pattern. But the most expected chance is on day 14th of cycle. Ovulation occurs at the mid cycle of ovarian activity that is the 14th day of regular menstrual cycle. Ovulation occurs about two weeks before the next expected period. This means if your average menstrual cycle is 28 Days, you ovulate around day 14. Role of Follicular Stimulating Hormone (F.S.H) This hormone is produced by anterior Lobe of pituitary Gland. The production of this Hormone is negligible in childhood but it increases just before the puberty. It acts on the primordial follicles (small follicles present in each ovary) of the ovaries and leads to the proliferation and growth of the follicles. Under the influence of F.S.H hormone these follicles mature and get enlarge. Maturity of the Follicles One of these primordial follicles mature and converted into Graafian follicle every month during the menstrual cycle near about the Day 12. Initially the cohort of follicles is stimulated but later on only one follicle becomes dominant and converts into Graafian follicle. Role of Luteinizing Hormone (L.H) The pituitary Gland also produces this Hormone. It acts on the mature Graafian follicle and leads to shedding of the ovum (Egg) and conversion of Graafian follicle into corpus Luteum, which later on is helpful in pregnancy. All these changes happen near the middle of the cycle, usually around Day 14, and these changes result in the releasing of ovum at the middle of cycle. You can asses the time of ovulation by observing how regular your period is every month. Periods must be regular for the exact Time of Ovulation One important thing to remember is that to find out the Exact Time of Ovulation one must have regular periods and days of cycle must be the same as previous month. This does not mean that date of periods every month must be the same. This means that cycle should be of 28 days and the day one of menses is calculated as the first day of your cycle. From this on you can calculate the 14th day which should be a week after your last period. Calculations of your Mid Cycle Just keep in mind that fertile window is the 5 days leading up to and including ovulation. The three days before ovulation and the actual day of ovulation is most fertile period. The length of your cycle determines the most fertile days for you. Which would be different for everyone according to length of their cycle. So the cycle varies; If you have 28 days between periods, ovulation typically occurs on day 14 and the most fertile days are 12, 13 and 14. If you have longer cycles, suppose 35 days between periods, ovulation occurs on day 21 and the most fertile days are 19, 20 and 21. If you have shorter cycles say 21 days between periods, ovulation occurs on day 7 and most fertile days are 5, 6 and 7 For Typical Cycle of 28 Days Suppose if your periods remain for 6 to 7 days, whenever you get free from menstrual flow and feel yourself completely dry, now start calculation from your dry spell and come forward to next week, if Day 1 is the first Day of your menstrual cycle, and a week after your Dry spell, the mid cycle comes that is the Day 14th which must be the time of your ovulation. Ovulation occurs 12 to 24 hours after L.H surge Understanding your menstrual cycle can be a good deal if you know the exact cause of your search that what you are looking for. You don’t need to be an expert, you can just become knowledgeable enough to find out the time of ovulation after observing your one cycle. In this way you can shorten your journey to become pregnant. Ovulation does not occur in all women Not all women ovulate every month, if an ovary is unable to produce a mature follicle which does not shed to release ovum, ovulation will not take place. This is called Anovulatory menstrual cycle. Ovulation occurs even in the absence of Periods Ovulation is one part of this menstrual cycle while the periods are another part, so it can happen that you are not having your regular periods but you are still ovulating and you are unaware of this fact that you could be pregnant even if you are not having periods. This is called ovulatory amenorrhea. High sexual Desire at Mid Cycle Many women experience high sexual desire when their menstrual flow has finished and dry spell comes. They feel can a urge for sex with their partner. This is another indication of ovulation at mid cycle. It is near about 14th day of cycle when you have high sexual desire and similarly chances of getting pregnant in these ovulation days. How to improve the chances to get pregnant during ovulation You should know the correct time of having sexual intercourse during days of ovulation. Eggs survive 24 hours after ovulation and sperm can survive up to 3 days, so you should have sex 2 to 3 days before ovulation. It is not the most advantageous option to have sex on the exact day of ovulation. You can just enjoy 2 to 3 days before up to the right day and time of ovulation. Having Sex on day 12 and day 16 is important Sex on day 12 and day 16 is important because in these days women have more chances of getting pregnant. Life span of Ovum An egg lives 12 to 24 hours after leaving the ovary. During this time if fertilization takes place then pregnancy starts, if not then this ovum is absorbed in the lining of uterus and cycles continues in a normal way with the shedding of endometrial lining of uterus in the form of menstrual blood 12 to 14 days after. Your Age Matters to your Fertility The most fertile time of every woman is between the age limit of 20 to 30 years. This is the time when she is highly fertile and chances of conception are 100 % in a healthy woman Chances of conception decreases, as age approaches Chances of conception decreases with the passage of time as age approaches like At about age 32 chances of conception decreases gradually but After 35 decline in fertility level speeds up By 40, fertility rate falls down by half At 30 chances of conceiving every month are 20 % and at 40 chances remain only 5%.
